Is it a threat or a boundary?
"DO THAT ONE MORE TIME AND I WILL TAKE IT AWAY!!!"
"Hey Bud I can not let you throw the ball against the window, it is made out of glass and it could break. You can take the ball outside and throw it there if you'd like. Do you want me to go with you?"
Two results different communication. A lot of times setting boundaries can turn into threats if we voice them that way. When setting a boundaries we always try to validate whats going on, see our kid not as a villain but an actual child who might does not know that something could break. Boundaries are guidelines for our kids to be and feel safe AND for us to help them not destroy unintentionally our interior.
It's all about how we communicate. Take a deep breath if you feel triggered and try to come to the present moment before responding. Give them the opportunity to understand why they can't do something (break the window) and be ready for them to do it again ANYWAYS! Because children want to test the boundaries, follow through with it by taking the ball NICELY. "I see you need a little help, I will take the ball for now and bring it outside for you."
We are a team. Kids don't know a lot of things and of course don't like to be told all day what is appropriate and what is not. Especially if it is so much fun.
What is something your kid does where you'd like to know how to respond in a more conscious way?
